AN AKAO SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850)

The oval iron plate is carved in an openwork design of a praying mantis. The rim and edge are round and have some rusted areas. One of the hitsu-ana is plugged in shakudo--height 7.3cm., width 6.9cm., thickness 5.5mm.

Lot Essay

The Akao school of Echizen had artists working in Edo who commonly made sukashi tsuba of shakudo plate. This example, however, is the Edo iron-plate style.
