A SHONAI SHOAMI SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1700)
The round shakudo plate tapers to the edge (goishi) and has a slightly textured surface. The face is inlaid in very thick sheet gold with two large and three small family crests of the oxalis bloom (katabami mon). Running cloud forms, in the same sheet gold, are inlaid between the flowers. The reverse of the plate has similar clouds and a brushwood fence in the lower right quarter of the plate--height and width 7.2cm., thickness at center 5.25mm., at the edge 3.0mm.

The style and the fine workmanship of this tsuba make it an excellent example of 'daimyo' quality work.
