A CANTON-STYLE TSUBA
MOMOYAMA PERIOD (CIRCA 1600)

The thick, octagon-shaped iron plate has a square rim and edge. The web is carved with an interlocking undercut scroll design that entangles and suspends a dragon, fish, waves, pavilions and clouds. The hitsu-ana was cut at a later date and is brass-lined--height and width 7.7cm., thickness 7.5mm.

Lot Essay

The design of this Canton-style tsuba is based on the cut-iron work found in decorative Chinese pieces dating to the late Ming dynasty. It is thought that some tsuba, perhaps including this example, were made in Canton and shipped to Nagasaki.
