This fine example of late iron carving could be the work of the Edo Higo school, particularly the students of Kamiyoshi Rakuju (1817-1884).

AN EDO HIGO TSUBA
MEIJI ERA (CIRCA 1900)
The oval iron plate is finely carved in a delicate and detailed openwork design of the New Year's fern and rope (uzuriha). The rim and edge are carved as a fine rope and the fern and leaves of the web are nearly in the round. The chisel marks around the central opening (nakago-ana) are the signature of the maker--height 7.0cm., width 6.7cm., thickness 5.0mm.
