A YANAGAWA SCHOOL KOGAI AND KOZUKA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1775), BOTH PIECES SIGNED YANAGAWA NAOMITSU WITH KAO
The kogai has a shakudo nanako plate of very fine grain, and is decorated with a gold shishi in very high relief with a peony branch in its mouth. Signed on the reverse, lower right. The kozuka is also of shakudo nanako with very fine grain and by the same hand. It is decorated with a mother shishi with a peony branch in her mouth and a young shishi playing near the mouth end of the kozuka, both in sheet gold cover. Signed on the reverse, lower right--kogai length 21.4cm., width 1.2cm., thickness 6.5mm.; kozuka length 9.7cm., width 1.5cm., thickness 7.5mm.
Double wood storage boxes. Inner box with inscription by Sato Kanzan, dated Showa 49 (1974). Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 247, dated Showa 46 (1971). (2)
