A PAIR OF MILLET AND QUAIL MENUKI
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850)
Each menuki is of shakudo plate and formed as a branch of millet leaves and stem, with shakudo partially covering the gold millet head. Gold-accented quail on each piece sit atop a millet leaf--length 3.8cm., width 1.2cm., thickness 5.25mm. (2)
Lot Essay
The subject is often associated with Araki Tomei, but the millet heads of these examples do not appear to have been formed by his specially-designed punch.
