A MITO SHOAMI SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1750)
The large, four-lobed iron plate (mokko) is carved and inlaid with the well-known design of a Dutchman and his dog under a pine tree. The figure is carved in bold lines, and the face and hands are inlaid in shakudo with gold nunome accents. The dog is carved in wide-line style and the chain is in brass. The pine tree needles are carved and their centers are brass. The reverse side continues the pine tree design. There are some rust spots on both sides of the plate--height 10.6cm., width 9.9cm., thickness 4.5mm.
Wood storage box. The inner side of the lid with inscription by Sato Kanzan, dated Showa 49 (1974). Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 156, dated Showa 46 (1971).
