A MITO SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850), SIGNED SEIUNSAI YUKIMITSU WITH KAO

The oval iron plate has a smooth surface carved in very high relief depicting a dragon in clouds. The reverse shows the dragon's body in clouds--height 7.0cm., width 6.4cm., thickness at the center 4.5mm., for the carved areas 9.5mm.

Lot Essay

Nitta Yukimitsu (fl. 1850) lived at Mito and later moved to Edo. Although he is known primarily for his katakiribori carving, a style imitating brushwork, he also excelled in high relief work such as this example.
