A TANAKA SCHOOL SUKASHI TSUBA
LATE EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850), SIGNED IKKANSHIKI RYUSO HOGEN (TANAKA KIYOTOSHI [1804-1876])

The iron plate of kawari shape is pierced with Futen with his bag of wind and Raiden with his thunder-drums. The surface is both hammered and polished and the design carved and inlaid, with fine gold damascene on the figures. Rust area of sides illustrated, left side--height 8.1cm., width 7.5cm., thickness 4mm.

In wood box inscribed by Sato Kanzan and dated Showa 47 (1972).
With tokubetsu kicho certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 136, dated Showa 46 (1971).

Tanaka Kiyotoshi was a student of Goto Shojo (fl. first half of the 19th century) and Kono Haruaki (1787-1860). He founded the famous Toryusai Tanaka school and had many students and followers who were active through the 19th into the early 20th century, working in the classic Tanaka school style.
