AN EDO KINKO TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850), SIGNED SENGA MASAMITSU WITH KAO

The round-cornered, rectangular iron plate is polished and colored to resemble shibuichi. It is carved in low relief and depicts the wind god, Futen Myo-o, accented in gold. The reverse is carved in wide lines with a design of drum heads of the thunder god, Raiden, amidst an overall pattern of clouds--height 8.5cm., width 8.0cm., thickness 3.5mm.

Lot Essay

Senga Masamitsu is unknown in recorded lists of tsuba artists. He was apparently an independent kinko worker in Edo.
