A YAMASHIRO HEIANJO WAKIZASHI
NAMBOKUCHO/EARLY MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA 1395), WITH A GOLD LACQUER SIGNATURE (KINPUNMEI), SANJO YOSHINORI, BY HON'AMI [KOSON]
Configuration (sugata): shizukagata naginata-zukuri (naginata-zukuri without the naginata-hi); length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 4 sun (42.7cm.); curvature (sori): 1.0cm.; carving (horimono): kaki-nagashi bo-hi extending through the tang.
Forging pattern (jihada): strong, dense wood grain (itame). Tempering pattern (hamon): chu-suguba with wide, extremely elegant 'swept sands' (sunagashi) and with patches of irregular nie, the hamon deftly woven together visually by wispy strands of inazuma.
Point (boshi): small and rounded (ko-maru) surrounded on its outside by meandering eddies of nie; long kaeri.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): o-suriage; file marks (yasurime): o-sujikai; end (nakagojiri): squared (kiri-jiri) with the remnants of a hole (mekugi-ana); gold lacquer attestation signature (kinpunmei): Sanjo Yoshinori; inside: Hon'ami with kakihan.
Shirasaya.
Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho token certificate, no. 15674, Showa 40 (1965), issued by the N.B.T.H.K.
