A LATER SOSHU KATANA
MUROMACHI PERIOD, DATED TENMON 13 (1544), SIGNED HIROIE

Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and boar's neck point (ikubi-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 4 sun, 5 bu (74.3cm.); curvature (sori): strong torii-zori of 2.2cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 1.05cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): dense burl (ko-mokume), indistinct, but almost of a fine pear skin texture (nashiji).
Tempering pattern (hamon): rather small irregular invected patterns (gonome midare), becoming more level and with pronounced 'swept sand' tempering (sunagashi) in the monouchi.
Point (boshi): brush tip (hakikake).
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): wide, slightly tapering and upswept, ubu and with a moist, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): sloping (sujikai); end (nakagojiri): iri-yamagata; holes (mekugi-ana): two (one double); signature (katanamei): Hiroie in open, kebori strokes; date (jidai): Tenmon 13-nen 2-gatsu hi (a day in the 2nd month of Tenmon 23 (1544)).

Handachi-koshirae comprising: a black ishime saya emblazoned with black lacquer futatsu tomoe-mon; shakudo ishime mounts (fuchi-kashira, koiguchi, kurikata, kojiri and seme-gane) applied with futatsu tomoe-mon in gold and shakudo, unsigned; the iron kirikomi mokko tsuba in tachi style is decorated with gold nunome stylized flowerheads and foliage, unsigned--length of koshirae 102cm.; length of tsuka 24.8cm.; diameter of tsuba 8.3cm.
