EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1625), SIGNED HARIMA (NO) KAMI FUJIWARA TERUHIRO, ATTRIBUTED TO TERUHIRO II

Configuration (sugata): naginata without yokote and with tri-bevelled back (mitsu-mune); length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 7 sun, 2 bu (52.2cm.); carving (horimono): maru-dome bo-hi ni tsure hi.
Forging pattern (jihada): remarkably fine and dense wood and burl (ko-itame mokume).
Tempering pattern (hamon): shallow, rolling waves (notare) in nioi and ko-nie.
Point (boshi): medium rounded (chu-maru) with medium kaeri.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): slender (50.5cm.), ubu and with a dry, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): kiri-yasuri; end (nakagojiri): rounded (kuri-jiri); signature (katanamei): Harima (no) Kami Fujiwara Teruhiro.

Lot Essay

There were fourteen generations of smiths named Teruhiro from 1596-1844. Teruhiro I was a student of Umetada Myoju and signed Higo (no) Kami. Teruhiro II signed Harima (no) Kami and Teruhiro III signed Seishu (no) ju; the only other generation to use the title of Harima (no) Kami was Teruhiro XI (circa 1750).
