EDO PERIOD, DATED EMPO 5 (1677), SIGNED SETTSU (NO) KAMI MINAMOTO TADAYUKI

Configuration (sugata): of flat, wedge section (hira-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 2 sun, 9 bu (69.4cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 1.3cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 1.1cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): tight, small wood grain (ko-itame).
Tempering pattern (hamon): long and very shallow undulations (gonome) with 'legs' (ashi) in bright ko-nie.
Point (boshi): long brushed tip (hakikake) with medium kaeri.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): slender, tapering, ubu and with a soft, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): sloping (sujikai); end (nakagojiri): iri-yamagata; holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (katanamei): Settsu (no) Kami Minamoto Tadayuki; date (jidai): Empo 5-nen 2-gatsu hi (a day in the 2nd month of Empo 5 [1677]).
