EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1830), SIGNED KIKU ICHI BIZEN OSAFUNE (NO) KYO/YOKOYAMA KAGA (NO) SUKE FUJIWARA SUKENAGA
Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 3 sun, 7.5 bu (41.8cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 1.0cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 0.8cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): extremely fine and tightly-compacted wood grain (ko-itame).
Tempering pattern (hamon): a very crisp suguba in the upper half of the blade displaying a crisp habuchi and also firm control of the ko-nie; the lower half breaks suddenly into a clove (choji) formation and drops to a yaki-dashi.
Point (boshi): medium rounded (chu-maru).
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): Bizen, ubu and with a thin, dry, grey patina; file marks (yasurime): slanted (katte-sagari); end (nakagojiri): ha-agari kuri-jiri; holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (katanamei): inside (ura): Kiku Ichi Bizen Osafune Kyo; outside (omote): Yokoyama Kaga (no) Suke Fujiwara Sukenaga.
