EDO PERIOD, DATED BUNKYU 4 (1864), SIGNED ASHU (NO) JU YASUKI RYOKO MINAMOTO SUKESHIGE SAKU
Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and large point (o-kissaki); length (nagasa): 3 shaku (90.9cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 1.2cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 1.0cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): almost patternless, but with a chikei-like whitish brilliance.
Tempering pattern (hamon): irregular and pointed tempering (gonome midare) and with yaki-dashi at the hamachi; there is scattered, thin tempering along the back (muneyaki).
Point (Boshi): extremely strong 'swept sands' (sunagashi) terminating in a brushed tip (hakikake) and with kaeri extending past the yokote line.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): long (30.3cm.), slender, tapering and ubu; file marks (yasurime): slanted (katte-sagari); end (nakagojiri): rounded to one side (ha-agari kuri-jiri); holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (tachimei): Ashu (no) ju Yasuki Ryoko Minamoto Sukeshige saku; date (jidai): Bunkyu 4-nen kinoye 2-gatsu kichi-nichi (an auspicious day in the 2nd month of Bunkyu 4 [1864]).
