DATED 1966, SIGNED UTSUSHI RAI KUNITOSHI MIYAIRI SHOHEI (B. 1913)

Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri with tri-bevelled back (mitsu-mune); length (nagasa): 8 sun, 8 bu (26.7cm.); curvature (sori): uchizori of 0.2cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): well-compacted and well-delineated wood grain (ko-itame).
Tempering pattern (hamon): medium suguba.
Point (boshi): medium rounded (chu-maru).
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): slightly tapering, ubu and with a new surface; file marks (yasurime): sloping (sujikai); end (nakagojiri): rounded (kuri-jiri); signature (katanamei): Utsushi Rai Kunitoshi Miyairi Shohei; inside (ura): Sama Compton haku (Honorable Dr. Compton); date (jidai): Showa teibi-nen 8-gatsu hi (a day in the 8th month of Showa 41 [1966]).
