In two parts: the T-shaped handle continuing to an irregular shaft with ink inscriptions continuing unfinished with bark and knots, with finished tapered cylindrical base; the slat seat hinged to mid-point, also with ink inscriptions--45 1/2in. long

Lot Essay

This unusual scrimshawed shooting stick is one of perhaps a dozen similarly illustrated examples of seating furniture carved by Josiah Hayden. Other pieces are known to be in the Union County Museum in Liberty, Indiana as well as in private collections.
