AN FRENCH SILVER-GILT AND ENAMEL MOUNTED ROCK CRYSTAL VASE AND COVER
PARIS, CIRCA 1870, MAKER'S MARK ?FL
In the Renaissance style, of oval vase-shaped form, the hexagonal base applied with a band of guilloche enclosing white enamel pearls with turquoises at intervals, rising to a baluster stem with scroll and mask brackets headed by lion masks, the bowl carved with flutes below a band of foliate scrolls, the shoulder pierced and chased with foliage and fleur-de-lys at intervals and applied on one side with a carved agate sardonyx intaglio depicting Cupid astride a lion, and on the other side with a facet-cut citrine held aloft by two putti holding a banner inscribed Henri IV, enclosed by a border of white enamel lobes with cabochon emeralds and amethysts at intervals, the multi-scroll handles headed by winged caryatids, the domed cover enamelled with white and black interlaced scrolls with turquoises at intervals and surmounted by the figure of St. George, marked on foot, rim and cover--10in.
