Lot Essay

The present model is an example of Carpeaux's study of 1868 for the figure of Asia, part of the Quatre Parties du Monde monument commissioned by the city of Paris for the Observatory fountain. The artist later reworked the bust for a more conservative bronze edition--loosing the sketchy boldness of the earlier work.
