L'Automne is one of several versions of the Series of the Four Seasons that Stevens painted for the King of Belgium around 1874-1875. A second version is in the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and a third in a Private Collection in Stockholm. The Johnson Collection in Philadelphia has a single panel depicting Autumn, and there is a watercolor of Summer in The Art Institute of Chicago. The different versions are not identical as Stevens varied specific details, such as the designs of the dresses used in each season.
