Lot Essay

This is one of many studies for a large painting now in the Ulster Museum, Belfast entitled The Amazon. It shows the artist's daughter, Eileen, on horseback holding a lance and standing on a promontory overlooking a North African landscape. Of the numerous studies that exist, some depict the horse trotting, others show different positions of the lance, some are half-lengths of the figure, and there is at least one known study of the head of the girl. In the final composition in Belfast, Lavery painted the horse white.
