A RARE LARGE STENCIL-DECORATED JIZHOU MEIPING
12TH/13TH CENTURY

Decorated with three stenciled, hexagonal medallions formed by conjoined ruyi heads encircling two lotus blossoms, below three prunus blossoms on the high shoulder, all reserved in the natural stoneware against a dark brown glaze thinning to rust brown at the edges of the decoration and on the lipped mouth rim, the interior of the neck and the base also glazed rust brown, foot rim chips--11 1/4 in. (28.6cm.) high

Lot Essay

The large snowflake design on this meiping is very rare. A meiping decorated with star-shaped flowers in the Jiangxi Provincial Museum is illustrated in Zhonguo taoci quanji, vol. 15, Shanghai, 1986, pl. 66 and a meiping in the St. Louis Art Museum illustrated by Margaret Medley, The Chinese Potter, 1976, fig. 122 is decorated with a design of scattered prunus blossoms
