A WUCAI DRAGON AND PHOENIX DISH
WANLI MARK IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE AND OF THE PERIOD

Well painted in bright enamels in the interior with a dragon and phoenix contesting a flaming pearl amidst dense foliate scroll, with further foliate scroll in the well, the reverse with beribboned auspicious emblems, riveted, cracks, chips--7 in. (17.8cm.) diam., box; together with a wucai circular container, Wanli six-character mark within a double circle and of the period, probably the bottom section of a box, decorated on the exterior with a continuous flower scroll of lotus, chrysanthemum and other flowers--6 1/4 in. (15.8cm.) diam. (2) (2)

Compare a very similar dish in The Art Institute of Chicago included in the exhibition Chinese Ceramics, Los Angeles County Musuem, 1952, Catalogue no. 307, and another in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, illustrated by Valenstein, A Handbook of Chinese Ceramics, 1989, p. 189, no. 185. A bowl with a similar pattern decorating the interior was included in the Exhibition of Ming and Ch'ing Porcelain from the Collection of the T.Y. Chao Family Foundation, Hong Kong, 1978, Catalogue no. 38
