The name inscribed on the side depicting the scholar is that of Wang Xiao Mei, a famous painter (1794-1877) from Yangzhou in Jiangshu province known for his figure, flower and animal studies. For two similar bottles attributed to Zhou Honglai, see Robert W.L. Kleiner, Chinese Snuff Bottles from the Collection of Mary and George Bloch, Hong Kong, 1987, col.pl. 133 and 134, bearing cyclical dates equivalent to 1902 and 1903. Interestingly one of these is in fact signed Baimen Hongbin followed by the seal Zhou, presumably the same hand as our example

For a bottle dated to the same year and very closely related in subject matter see Robert Hall, Chinese Snuff Bottles IV, Catalogue, Boston, October 10, 1991, lot 89; and another by Sidney L. Moss, The Literati Mode, 1986, pl.113
