Of rounded spade shape, one side carved with a scene of cattle, the other side with fighting rams, some restoration; and a tortoiseshell snuff tray, probably of Japanese manufacture, painted in lacquer with chrysanthemum sprays

This bottle was made in sections and the restoration seems to follow the join lines up the sides, the foot and mouth are also separately cut. Tortoiseshell was highly prized as a tribute material and was greatly esteemed in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868). Nagasaki became the center of the industry and the snuff tray probably originated there
