Lot Essay

The dancer Serge Oukrainisky posed for the Hindu Incense Burner. Conceived in 1920 and included in the artist's first one woman show held at the Ferargil Galleries in New York the following year, it proved to be one of Hoffman's most commercially successful models. Thirty-two life-time examples were cast by a variety of foundries as was one posthumous example in 1970.
