Messaline was by Douvreur-ex-Couvreur and out of Paquerette, foaled in 1912. Bred in France, the mare and her foal were the property of Mrs. Robert Emmet, The Greyling Stud, Moreton Morrell, Warwickshire, England. The mare was First at Mortagne Show, 1917, 1918, 1919, First at the Show of the Royal Counties Agricultural Society, 1920; First and Group Prize at the Show of the Norfolk Agricultural Society, 1920; First at Moreton-in-the-Marsh, 1920; and First and Champion at the Show of the Royal Agricultural Society of England, 1921, 1922.
