Lot Essay

In 1881, Saint-Gaudens modeled a double portrait relief of Mrs. Helen Parrish Lee and her daughter. He created the present relief, which he considered one of his best works, the same year by working from the study for the double portrait. The present bronze demonstrates how the artist reworked the image, refining and sharpening the model.
