This picture closely relates to Sanford Gifford's A Sketch on the Roman Compagna which was sold at the Gifford Estate Sale in 1881, exhibited in the Sanford Robinson Gifford Memorial Exhibition and sold again in these rooms on May 29, 1987, lot 58. Gifford and McEntee were both working in Italy in 1868, and often painted side by side in and around Rome as these two pictures indicate.
