Eastman Johnson was most accomplished and imaginative during the 1870s, and some of the artist's best known genre pictures were painted during this period. Many of these were based on Nantucket scenes and incorporated native islanders, some of whose descendants still remain on Nantucket today. This study was one of several sketches Johnson made for his final picture The Nantucket School of Philosophy, which is owned by the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore.
