According to D. Dodge Thompson, self-portraits are extremely rare in Stewart's work. In fact, this hitherto unknown work is the only known true self portrait. On several occasions, most notably in Five O'Clock Tea (1884) sold in these rooms on November 30, 1990 as lot 55, and The Hunt Ball (1885), Stewart included himself in multi-figural compositions.

Mrs. Theriat, to whom the painting is inscribed, was the widow of the American expatriate artist Charles James Theriat who lived and exhibited in Paris between 1889 and 1900.
