Dorothy and Richard Rodgers purchased four Microbes by Max Ernst from Bodley Gallery in 1961. Three were bequeathed to the Brooklyn Museum in 1970. The present one was selected by Max Ernst to be illustrated on the cover of his book Sept Microbes vus à travers un tempèrament. This book with text by the artist reproduced thirty Microbes in actual size.
