Hayden moved from Warsaw to Paris in 1907 and joined the circle of artists, including other ex-patriates, who lived in Montparnasse. He was immediately drawn to Post-Impressionist and Fauvist styles. He exhibited for the first time in Paris at the 1909 Salon d'Automne. By the beginning of the First World War, Cubism was the dominant influence on his painting (please see Christie's New York sale May 13, 1992, lot 235).
