BURNE-JONES, Sir EDWARD. [KELMSCOTT PRESS and WILLIAM MORRIS]. Five drawings and one partial preparatory outline sketch, plus outline frames only for two more drawings, all for The Apocrypha, charcoal on two sheets of thick brown paper, rectos and versos, each of the eight frames titled in ink by Georgiana Burne-Jones, sheets measure 228 x 155mm. (9 x 6 1/8in.) approximately, mounted and contained in quarter morocco slipcase. It is known that Morris thought seriously of publishing a Kelmscott edition of the Bible but work on the Chaucer occupied almost all of his attention until his death in October 1896. The press continued for a further eighteen months, finishing work in hand and the founder's special projects. Letters from various members of Morris's circle and drawings by Ned, such as these, are all that are left to us of this glorious yet unrealised project.
