"PAGAN PAPERS"

Regarding the publication of his first book, Pagan Papers, issued by Matthews and Lane (and in America by Stone and Kimball) in December 1893. 19 January: "I wonder whether you would care to publish a quite small selection of articles that I have had in the 'National Observer" and 'St. James's Gazette' during the past few years? Docketed at top: "Yes please send." 26 September; "Henley has asked me if I could let him see a set of sheets of the book, before it appears...My proofs have all gone back...perhaps when you get yours back from [Aubrey] Beardsley [who designed the pictorial title-page] you could lend them to him..." 28 September: "Thanks for your Parcel, received this morning. I enclose you the last proof I have recd. up to now, for revise. Also a short note of acknowledgement, to appear somewhere at the beginning..."
