Autograph letter signed TO ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE, Kelmscott House, Hammersmith, 22 July 1882. 2 1/2 pages, 8vo; tipped into a copy of the first edition of Swinburne's Astrophel and Other Poems, London: Chatto & Windus, 1894, 8vo, original dark green cloth, cloth slipcase, the book dedicated to Morris, Tinker 2033, H. Buxton Forman's copy with his pencilled ownership initials and date ("9.10.96"), bookplate of John A. Spoor.
A fine letter thanking Swinburne for a copy of the latter's Tristram of Lyonesse, and Other Poems (1882). "I came up to London...and found your book awaiting me; I would not do it the injustice of pretending to read it admidst my hurry here, but shall have the advantage of doing so at Kelmscott in plenteous quiet after today, so I will write to you again about it: meanwhile I can at least send you my hearty congratulations on having put forth such a splendid work as even a mere glance shows it to me. You see I am getting an oldish fellow now, and bear on my back a wallet of disappointment & 'tacenda'; so that the fight which I daily wage against dullness & lifelessness is sometimes a hard one, and the success of failure of those who were my companions on the other side of the tangle of middle life encourages or discourages me hugely. In the few lines I have read of your new book there seem to me tokens of a happiness & fullness of life in you which put fresh heart in me, & give me the greatest pleasure, so that in all honesty I owe you deep thanks for your book..."
