PATER, WALTER. Two autograph letters signed and one autograph letter-card signed to Henry J.C. Cust, editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, Brasenose College, Oxford, 4, 9, and 19 May, n.y. [1893]. Together 4 pages, 8vo and oblong 12mo, two slight paper-clip rust marks.

Regarding a review and an article for the periodical. 4 May: "...I shall be willing to write an article on Dante's Pilgrim's Progress, on the terms you propose. Kindly send me the book..." 9 May: "I should not be able to review the Sceptics of the Renaissance, as it is a very lengthy work to read. Meantime, my friend, Mr. F.W. [Busell?] happened to see the book, and is anxious to write an article on it, which, he is very competent to do. Do you approve of this? If so, do not reply to him. I would send you that article, and my own, when they are ready -- two or three weeks hence..." 19 May: "I am suffering from an attack of gout, and very far from able to do my usual amount of work. I have therefore thought it best to return the books on Dante, that you may put them into the hands of some one who could review them without further delay. Pray excuse this failure to do what I promised..." Letters of Walter Pater, nos. 224A and 230A.
