READE, CHARLES. Autograph letter signed TO MATTHEW ARNOLD ("Dear Mr. Arnold"), 2 Albert Terrace, Knightsbridge, London, 15 November [1875]. 2 pages, 4to, small stain at extreme bottom edges.

Regarding the first performance of the revival of Masks and Faces, a comedy by Reade and Tom Taylor, on 6 November 1875 at the Prince of Wales's Royal Theatre: "I am truly glad you enjoyed the play. There was a good deal to forgive -- the slowness of all the [action?]...the long wait...the wooden performance of Mr. Archer, but much depends on the spirit in which people go to a first night; I have friends and [considerate?] judges both in you and Mrs. Arnold. Some of the points flew over the head of the ladies & gentlemen in the stalls and it was a comfort to me to have an 'Oxford Scholar' in the dress circle. Pray accept my thanks both of you for coming and for your kind [appreciation?] of this old new piece." Masks and Faces was first produced in 1852 (and published in 1854); Reade's first novel, Peg Woffington (1853), was adapted from it.
