At the time Watts-Dunton, best known for being Swinburne's "keeper" and companion, was Rossetti's solicitor (see Stetz & Lasner 53 for a 1878 letter from Rossetti to him). The recipient was later to model the major character in his roman à clef, Aylwin (1898), after Rossetti.
