THOMPSON, FRANCIS. Autograph letter signed ("F. Thompson") to Everard Meynell, "28 Elgin Avenue," n.p., n.d. [London, 11 August 1905]. One page, small 4to, in pencil on lined tan paper, inlaid, with stamped envelope addressed by Thompson in ink (inlaid).
"I was so unwell & done up today that I could not get outside the house until late; for which I am very sorry. But I am very considerably better tonight, & will be at the shop in good time tomorrow morning, when I hope to see you. I had been very upset all yesterday, after being bad all week, and my face was yellow as a Chinaman's this morning with the poison in my system. It is cleared tonight, & I hope a better day tomorrow...Love to all. I hope they are well, especially your father & Olivia...I wish the weather were warm & sunny again, especially if I am to go away. Will see you all at the house likewise in the evening."
Everard Meynell, son of Wilfrid and Alice Meynell and elder brother of Sir Francis Meynell, wrote the standard biography of the poet, The Life of Francis Thompson (1913). Wilfrid Meynell had "discovered" Thompson in 1888 and it was the Meynells who cared for him with great devotion during his short life and when he died (in 1907) saw that his work received the recognition it deserved. Autograph material of Thompson, best known for the religious poem "The Hound of Heaven," is very rare.
