A rare portrait of Clemens, this photograph was taken in Sydney or Melbourne, Australia in late September or early October 1895. In a letter of 3 October 1895 to H. Walter Barnett of the Falk Studio, Melbourne, Clemens wrote that the Falk portraits were "much the best ones I have ever had." The Mark Twain Papers, to whom we are grateful for details, possesses a slightly smaller print of this image, without the imprinted mount. This copy was inscribed by Clemens to the wife of Lieutenant Governor Sir William H. Goodenough (1833-1898), commander of British troops in South Africa from 1894-1898 (See his letter in lot ).
