WASHINGTON, GEORGE, President. Engraved document signed ("Go: Washington") as President, countersigned by Timothy Pickering, Secretary of State and James Lamb, n.p. [New York], 2 March 1797. One page, large folio, ON FINE PARCHMENT, finely engraved italic text at top "By the President of the United States of America," beneath a very large (5 1/2 x 11 1/2 in.) engraved vignette of a light-house on a rocky inlet with two sailing ships (one flying a large American flag) and a distant harbor (New York?) in the background, scallop edge at top, with small legend "I S sculp.," at lower left, accomplished in manuscript, papered seal of the United States at lower left, the ink accomplishments faded but Washington and Pickering's signatures unfaded.

The elaborately engraved passport requests that "the Brig, Lady Washington, Jonathan Webb...commander, of the burthen of 113...tons...mounted with no guns, navigated with 9 men, to pass with her company, passengers, goods and merchandise, without any hindrance, seizure or molestation, the said brig appearing by good testimony to belong to one or more citizens of the United States...."
