KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI: kakuban (20.6 x 18cm.); Shogikoma "Shogi colts", depicting a lacquer shogi board decorated with young pine and cranes in flight (the crest of the poet Shuchodo Monoyana), with a group of chessmen scattered on the board and beside it, and a porcelain tripod bowl containing dwarf prunus and a fukujuso plant which stands beside the chess pieces on the board. Three poems accompany the design, which is set against a pale blue ground. Two are by Rakushotei Midori and one is by Shuchodo Monoyana.
