CRIB VS. MOLINEAUX SILK
A circa 1820 woven silk commemorating the battle between Tom Crib, champion of England, and Molineaux held at Thislton Gap England on September 28, 1811. The elaborate silk contains historical personal facts about each fighter and a round by round account of the fight. The eleventh and last round is described as follows ELEVENTH - CRIB had given another chance away respecting time, but the MOOR was in a state of stupor, his senses having been completely milled out of him; and receiving a Floorer was unable to be got from it- when victory was announced (sic) in a scotch reel by GULLY (crib's second) and CRIB, elated with success, that the applause was tumultuous in the extreme. The silk pictures the fighters in the center and famous boxing personalities around the border including: Dutch Sam, J. Belcher, Henry Pearce and Daniel Mendoza. It is framed in an eighteenth century frame with a carved finial on which are hand painted American and British flags--33 x 31 in.
