Taras, the only Spartan colony in Italy, did not produce coinage until about 520 BC, some thirty years later than Sybaris (see lot 615) and the other colonies of south western Italy. Consequently, the incuse fabric was in use at Taras for only about ten years until the adoption of the conventional double-relief format in about 510 BC.
