The early history of the colony of Kamarina was extremely violent; the city was destroyed twice by the Syracusans in 553 BC and 484 BC. This coin is contemporary with the third foundation of the city in 461 BC; the military types of the shield and greaves presumably reflect the determination of the new citizens to maintain their independence. With help from Leontini and later Athens Kamarina was able to withstand further Syracusan attacks in the later fifth Century but she eventually succumbed to Carthage during the First Punic War.
