Sicily, Naxos (c. 510 BC), Silver Drachm, 5.65 gms, die axis 225°, archaic head of Dionysus left, with pointed beard and wearing ivy-wreath, border made up of dots between two plain lines, rev. bunch of grapes hanging from stalk, leaves left and right, /KNAXION/k below (cf Cahn, pl. 2, no. 39 (V 28/R 32); SNG ANS 514; Boston 301; SNG Lloyd 1147), small rough area at top of left hand vine leaf on reverse, otherwise about extremely fine and very rare, an archaic masterpiece

Naxos lay below the fertile, vineyard-covered slopes of Mount Etna and her wealth derived from the wine export trade. On her coinage, almost certainly the first in Sicily and one of the first anywhere with types on both sides, the citizens of Naxos honoured their patron deity and their local product.
