A HANAKAIRAGI SAME-ZAYA UCHIGATANA-KOSHIRAE
EDO PERIOD (19TH CENTURY)

Comprising: a hanakairagi same-zaya wrapped haraawase kise (of one section joined on the back) and fitted with black lacquer kojiri, kurikata and koiguchi [circular section of same below the kurikata missing]; wood tsunagi; an iron nadekakugata tsuba which is deeply and finely carved with a sage and attendant viewing a distant mountain waterfall, the landscape continuing onto the back, ryu-hitsu plugged with shakudo and signed Choshu Hagi (no) ju Tomotsugu saku; a black-wrapped tsuka [silk damaged] with wakibashiri same set tanzaku kise and fitted with a pair of shakudo nanako fuchi-kashira applied in shakudo and gold with sporting shishi, signed Hirata Harunari and kao and with a pair of gold shishi menuki, unsigned, but probably by the same artist --- koshirae 96.5 cm. long, tsuka 23.8 cm. long, tsuba 7.6 cm. high
