A KOTO KATANA
MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA EARLY 14TH CENTURY), PROBABLY YAMATO


Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 2 sun, 9 bu (69.4 cm.); curvature (sori): torii-zori of 1.3 cm.; decrease in width of blade (fumbari): 0.9 cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): wood grain (itame) mixed with some straight grain (masame).
Tempering pattern (hamon): a medium width suguba in bright ko-nie composed predominantly of a 'brushed' (hotsure) outline and with some kinsuji, but with the dominant pattern continuing along the entire length and becoming more pronounced in the lower half of the ura hamon and near the monouchi on the omote; additionally, there are scattered small and slanted 'rootlets' (ko-ashi, saka-ashi) in the ura monouchi.
Point (boshi): particularly strong brushed tip (hakikake). Tang (nakago) shape (keitai): shortened (suriage) probably about 8 cm.; file marks (yasurime): slanted (katte-sagari); end (nakagojiri): squared (kiri-jiri); holes (mekugi-ana): three; signature (mei): none (mumei).

Handachi koshirae comprising: a black lacquer saya decorated with ground shell nashiji and lacquer sprays of cherry blossoms and butterflies [some chips and dents]; newly srapped tsuka; all mounts are silvered and void of decoration; black lacquer mokko tsuba with shibuichi o-seppa engraved with scrolling foliage surrounding Toda and Nagamatsu mon, unsigned---length of koshirae 100.3 cm., length of tsuka 23.2 cm., height of tsuba 7.2 cm.
